A ship was any large wind-powered vessel with sails rigged in a specific manner. In technical terms, a ship was a sailing vessel with a specific rig of at least three square-rigged masts and a full bowsprit; other types of vessel were also defined by their sailplan, e.g. barque, brigantine, etc..
